Organizing Tips

  • Start small. Don’t try to tackle everything at once. Choose one area or category to work on at a time, such as your clothes, your books, or your papers. Set a timer for 15 minutes and see how much you can accomplish in that time.
  • Sort and purge. As you go through each area or category, sort your items into four piles: keep, donate, sell, or trash.
  • Be ruthless and only keep the things that you love, use, or need. Ask yourself these questions to help you decide what to keep and what to let go:
  • Do I love it?
  • Do I use it?
  • Do I need it?
  • Does it fit me or my space?
  • Does it spark joy?

If the answer is no to any of these questions, then it’s time to say goodbye to that item. Thank it for its service and send it on its way. **On a personal note, it took me a few years to get myself into the ruthless stage of clearing the clutter, but my rule of thumb is that if I haven’t used it in one year, then it leaves.

  • Store and label. Once you’ve decided what to keep, find a place for everything and put everything in its place. Use containers, baskets, bins, boxes, or drawers to store your items neatly and efficiently. Label everything clearly so you know what’s inside each container and where to find it. This will also help you avoid creating new clutter by putting things back where they belong.
  • Tip: I use clear plastic bins with labels, so if I am looking for something in particular, I don’t need to go through every bin to find it!
  • Maintain and enjoy. Congratulations! You’ve cleared your space and your mind. Now it’s time to enjoy the benefits of your hard work. But don’t stop there. To keep your space organized and tidy, you need to maintain it regularly. Follow these simple habits to keep clutter at bay:
  • Put things away as soon as you’re done using them. For me, this is key to clearing it off my “mental plate”. Get it done, over with, wipe your hands clean of that task. Move on!
  • Deal with mail, bills, receipts, and other papers as soon as they arrive.
  • Donate or sell items that you no longer love, use, or need.
  • Do a quick decluttering session every week or month to keep things in order.

Organizing doesn’t have to be ugly. Purchase pretty or decorative items for your home and incorporate them into your decor! By following these organizing tips, you’ll be able to start the new year with a clear space and a clear mind. You’ll feel more relaxed, happy, and motivated to achieve your goals and dreams. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a bag, a box, or a bin, and start clearing your space and your mind today!
