Danes use the word to describe that perfect little corner in their home. In this corner, the lighting is soft, the blankets are warm, and the pace of life slows down. Given how cold and dark Danish winters can be, it makes sense that they’ve mastered the art of cozy living.
And honestly, if anyone can relate, it’s those of us living through Alberta winters.
Why a Hyggekrog Feels So Right for Alberta
I don’t have a hyggekrog set up yet, but the idea has been living rent-free in my mind. Winters here are long. I picture it like this.
A soft chair and a half, close to the fire, but not too close. A thick blanket draped over the back. A couple of cushions that don’t just look soft but actually are. . A side table for snacks, tea, or the remote on movie nights and my dog!
Warm lighting. Calm energy. Comfort that doesn’t try too hard.
It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to feel like home.
